VMB: Policy 95/96-4: Computer Records vs. Written Records

The VMB adopted the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) policy, with the stated conditions, for veterinary record keeping. As long as the DEA's conditions are met, the VMB will accept computer generated records as written records. The following outlines those conditions:

1. Daily hard copy printouts with original signatures of records listing controlled substance usage.
2. Adequate record security to prevent alterations.
3. A documented system for regular information backups.

Any questions regarding this policy should be directed to either Susan Geranen, Executive Officer, or Gina Bayless, Enforcement Program Manager,
at (916) 263-2610.
